Ushering in a new chapter in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill was officially presented as India’s new Test captain ahead of the highly anticipated five-match series against England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared images of the 25-year-old’s official photoshoot on Tuesday, captioning the post on X: “Folks — your Test captain, Shubman Gill.”

This leadership transition comes after senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket last month, leaving a significant experience gap. In response, the team management has turned to youth, appointing Gill to lead a refreshed Indian squad on foreign soil.

Since landing in England, Gill has been actively training with the team, facing the likes of pace spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the nets. Arshdeep Singh, part of India’s pace unit, praised Gill’s form, saying he’s looking in “good touch.”

Reflecting on his elevation to captaincy, Gill said in a BCCI video, “As a young kid, everyone dreams of playing Test cricket for India. To be given this opportunity and responsibility is a great honour.”

The England series, which begins on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds and concludes in August 2025, marks a crucial test for India’s next generation. Matches will be played at some of the country’s most iconic venues including Edgbaston, Lord’s, The Oval, and Old Trafford.

India’s Test squad for the England series:
Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
